Dr-I Profile O

ur museum Fokker Dr-I replica (to our knowledge, no original aircraft remain) was acquired in 1998 as a flying replica project by the Vintage Aero Flying Museum. We're thankful to Mr. John Eberly for constructing this replica from plans in the late 1970's.

Perhaps one of the more difficult aircraft to land, we've been fortunate to have several qualified pilots fly this tri-plane. The Dr-1 is a difficult aircraft to fly.  Its tri-wing construction makes for limited visibility by the pilot during takeoff and landing.  Extreme concentration is required because of its unstable characteristics, visibility difficulties and limited 125 mile range of flight. One can often see it in the air at our museum on calm evenings and some Saturdays.

It is the most recognizable aircraft due to Charles M. Shultz and his cartoon characterization of "Snoopy and the Red Baron".  There was in fact a real Red Baron, Rittmiester "Baron" von Richthofen, Ace of Aces with 80 victories, whose artifacts are presented in the museum collection.

Our Fokker Dr-I is one of our flagship replicas which the public is always thrilled to see fly. Our staff of experienced maintenance technicians (all volunteers!) frequently attends to the engine and flight control surfaces to insure we're able to fly the triplane as often as weather permits.

Our plane is powered by a Lycoming engine that develops 180 HP. The original Oberursel powerplant only produced 110HP! You might note the cylinders showing beneath the front cowl--they are actually there merely to lend a measure of authenticity to the appearance as the original planes had rotary engines. Our plane actually has a "flat" Lycoming IO-360. Please stop by our museum to see this and many of our other vintage aircraft both on display and in flight!

We want to thank Ryan Lunde of Champion Air Photos for many of the wonderful pictures you see on our website. Ryan's photos appear in the below slideshow.
