D-VIII Profile O

ur museum Fokker D-VIII replica (to our knowledge, no original aircraft remain) was acquired as a project by the Vintage Aero Flying Museum in 2005. Much work remained to be accomplished, but we were lucky indeed to be able to have a jump start on the construction process.

The markings on this distinctive aircraft are of German Ace Oberleutenant Gutthard Sachsenberg, who had 31 victories. Oberleutenant Sachsenberg desired to be recognized by his flamboyant yellow and black harlequin pattern as seen on the fuselage and by his bright green wing.

The Fokker D-VIII took shape over the next few years led by the hard work of Mike DeSanti, Mark Holiday and Andy Parks. Pilot Mark Holliday undertook the first flight in the spring of 2008. Other than the need to adjust the wing angle of incidence, the first flight went very well.

decalsWe are extremely fortunate in that first hand information regarding the personality and flying abilities of Sachsenberg were provided by a friend (Mr. Venderaustin) of our museum President, Andy Parks. Andy learned of Mr. Venderaustin's personal knowledge and was able to take notes which he then shared with museum staff and pilots.

The only original fuselage remaining in the world is located at the Caproni museum in Italy. The museum is now restoring the plane. This link allows you to view a translated page from the museum's website with more information.

Our plane is powered by a Continental engine that develops 220 HP. The original Oberursel powerplant only produced 110HP! We frequently fly our Fokker D-VIII, weather permitting. Please stop by our museum to see this and many of our other vintage aircraft both on display and in flight!
